The Gilded Portraits

Native American women of the 1870s–1910s, painted from historical photographs in oil, 22-karat gold, and silver leaf — each portrait returning a face to the light, each page telling her story.

The Artist

Victoria Brooks

American impressionist · thirty-five years at the easel

Art lovers across the country know Victoria for sun-drenched California canvases — intimate figures, coastlines, and gardens painted in a vibrant impressionist style. A former art director in television and film, she looks to Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn as her masters, and counts numerous Best of Show awards among her honors, most recently at the national Magnum Opus exhibition.

The Gilded Portraits turn that lifetime of portrait craft toward history — and they are painted with the same devotion to light she chases en plein air from Lake Tahoe to Provence.
