Little Bird

A photograph that circulates widely under the caption 'Little Bird, an Ojibwe woman, 1908' is the most likely source for this painting. It was made by Roland W. Reed, a Minnesota photographer who in 1907 sold his commercial studios to devote himself to photographing Native people, working especially among Ojibwe communities of the Red Lake region. Whether 'Little Bird' was the sitter's actual recorded name or Reed's poetic title is genuinely uncertain — his other works carry captions like 'The Moose Call' — and honesty requires saying so.

Reed was a pictorialist. Like Curtis, he posed his sitters in an imagined earlier time, photographing Ojibwe life as it had been rather than as it was in 1908 — the era of allotment, timber loss, and boarding schools in northern Minnesota. His images are undeniably beautiful and undeniably curated; he refused to sell his negatives commercially, and his work went unattributed for decades. The woman in the 1908 portrait therefore reaches us doubly veiled: through a romantic staging she did not choose, and through a caption that may translate, simplify, or replace whatever name she actually carried in Ojibwemowin, where bineshiinh means bird.

Archives hold more than one Little Bird — among them an Arapaho delegate photographed by F.A. Rinehart in 1898 — a reminder of how translated names blur across the record and how easily individuals dissolve into an index entry. The painting's task is the opposite of the archive's habit: not to file her under a type, but to return a living gaze to one woman the camera met in northern Minnesota in 1908, and to hold open the possibility that Little Bird was truly her name.
