Louise Red Cloud

Red Cloud — Maȟpíya Lúta — led the Oglala Lakota through the wars for the Powder River country and the long diplomacy that followed, and became perhaps the most photographed Native leader of the nineteenth century, sitting for the camera more than a hundred times. He and his wife Pretty Owl, together until his death at Pine Ridge in 1909, raised six children by most counts. The son, Jack Red Cloud, is well documented. The daughters are harder to see: agency clerks wrote Lakota names inconsistently, and the rolls render them variously — Tells Him, Charges at Him, Comes Back — alongside a Louise.

A daughter named Louise does appear in the record. Pine Ridge census rolls of the 1880s list Louise, daughter of Red Cloud, living with her husband Peter Richard, of the French-Lakota Richard (Reshaw) trading family long intermarried with the Oglala; their children included Baptiste, Joseph, and Susanna. Family genealogies give her birth about 1854 and her death about 1893, and Lakota descendants today name her as their grandmother. Those genealogies rest on thin and sometimes conflicting paper, so the dates should be held loosely — but the woman herself is not an invention. A Louise Red Cloud lived, married, and raised children at Pine Ridge.

The photograph is another matter, and honesty requires saying so. The portrait that circulates as 'Louise Red Cloud, daughter of Chief Red Cloud' carries no photographer's imprint and no date; no institutional negative has been located, and the identification rests on the caption tradition rather than a documented sitting. Victoria paints her as the caption remembers her. If the label is right, the face belongs to a woman born on the free plains who saw the Bozeman Trail forts abandoned after her father's war and lived out her days in the first reservation generation — a life the records sketch only in outline, and a name her family still carries.
