Rachel Standing Soldier

Rachel Standing Soldier sat for this portrait in 1904 in the Fort Yates studio of Frank Bennett Fiske, on the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota. The State Historical Society of North Dakota still holds the glass-plate negative, with a plain catalog line: she sits posed for a portrait, wearing a long dress, necklace, earrings, and belt. She was Lakota, of the Standing Rock community of Hunkpapa Lakota and Yanktonai Dakota people whom Fiske photographed for half a century.

Fiske was seventeen when the post photographer's studio fell to him in 1900; born at a Missouri River army post and raised at Standing Rock, he spent the rest of his life photographing his Lakota and Dakota neighbors, who came to his studio in their finest clothing and on their own terms. The Standing Soldier family recurs throughout his files — Jerome, Maggie, Louise, even the family's houses appear — and Rachel's portrait belongs to that longer record, one family returning to the same camera across years of sittings rather than a single encounter.

Her name itself holds the history of her generation: Standing Soldier, a Lakota family name carried into English, joined to Rachel, a given name of the church and school era. Beyond the portrait and her family's recurring presence in the Fiske collection, the public archives add little — no dates of birth or death were found. What survives is what she wore to the camera in 1904, listed piece by piece in the catalog line — the long dress, the necklace, the earrings, the belt — and the face the painting now returns to color.
